Marine Terminals Corporation (MTC), contract stevedore and terminal operating company, announced that 2003 marked the first time it surpassed handling six million TEUs in one year.

In making the announcement, MTC President/CEO Douglas Tilden congratulated all the terminals involved in achieving this landmark.

"The hard work of MTC management and labor at our West and East Coast sites contributed to achieving this company milestone of moving six million TEUs in one year," Tilden said. "This volume represents the combined total of containers handled at MTC's general stevedoring operations, container facilities, and joint-venture container terminals. We could not have achieved this milestone without the great cooperation we experience with all of our customers and joint-venture partners. By working closely with our business partners, employing best practices and utilizing the latest terminal management technologies, we are confident in our ability to break this record in 2004."

Tilden also noted that the majority of the volume handled utilized MTC's M-21 Terminal Operating System. The M-21 system was co-developed by Embarcadero Systems Corp. and Total Soft Bank, Ltd. of Korea. The system was completed and installed at nine terminals in 2003.

"MTC's deployment of the M-21 Terminal Operating System provides a firm foundation for expanding container volumes efficiently over increasingly constrained terminal facilities," Tilden explained.

Oakland-headquartered Marine Terminals Corp. has served the U.S. West Coast shipping community since 1931 and the U.S. East Coast since 2001, when it acquired 71-year-old Stevens Shipping & Terminal Co. in the Southeast. Combined, MTC has stevedoring and terminal operations in more than 26 West Coast locations and five East Coast ports.

MTC provides a comprehensive network of stevedoring, terminal operations and related cargo-handling services for all major cargoes, including containers, automobiles, refrigerated commodities, steel, forest products, general cargo, bulk, rolling stock, yachts, heavy lifts and special projects. MTC's diversified services to the transportation industry are enhanced and expanded through their many affiliates that specialize in insurance, warehousing, equipment, M&R, and software development.
