The success of Marine Terminals Corp.’s safety program is clearly visible as the company’s Port Hueneme and Stockton operations took top honors in their class for 2003 from The Pacific Maritime Association.

At the recent PMA Southern California 55th Annual Safety Awards Banquet, MTC-Port Hueneme garnered First Place Southern California “Area” Group B Stevedore Accident Prevention Award for the fourth consecutive year, the First Place “Coast” Group B Stevedore Accident Prevention Award.

Kevin Beirne, MTC’s Port Hueneme site manager, was pleased his area was recognized for its safety program achievements.

ILWU Local 46 is to be commended for this achievement,” Beirne said. “They are equal partners with MTC’s management team in our safety program. It is only by working together can we ensure a safe environment for both people and cargo.”

MTC-Stockton won the First Place Group C Stevedore “Area” Award Northern California, Second Place Group C Stevedore “Coast” Award and Local Award for Zero Injury Rate Group C Stevedoring.

The National Lines Bureau was presented with the First Place Coast Award and First Place Area Award for Lines Companies.

Other Marine Terminals Corp. sites recognized for safety include Oregon Group A Container Operations “Area” Meritorious Lowest Injury Rate Award and a Reduction In Injury Rate Award; Washington Second Place Group A Container Operations “Area” Accident Prevention Award; and Vancouver Second Place Group B Stevedore “Area” Accident Prevention Award and a Reduction In Injury Rate Award.

Executive Vice President - MTC Operations Dave Adam commented on MTC’s overall accomplishments.

“Safety has always been a top priority in all MTC’s operations,” Adam said. “MTC regional safety departments are all ISO registered and hold their own ISO certification from Worldwide Quality Assurance, United Kingdom. However, we know these achievements represent a group effort that could not have been accomplished without the tremendous support of our ILWU labor force.”
