Marine Terminals Corp. Donates $25,000 to Support ITEP Expansion

April 21, 2006

Marine Terminals Corp. recently presented a check for $25,000 to the International Trade Education Programs (ITEP) during a gathering of students representing the four ITEP academies, faculty and ITEP board members.

In attendance to receive the check was ITEP Board President Gerry Fisher (Lord, Bissell and Brook), Banning High School Principal Michael Summe, ITEP Founder and Executive Director Carol Rowen, teachers Annette Gregson, Virginia Marsoobian and Oscar Salas, and eight students from the four academies participating in the ITEP: Melvin Urias, Maricela Lopez, Monica Reyes, Stefanie Hernandez, Jesse Truijillo, Alexandria Avila, Edgardo Escheverria and Richard Aguero.

When presenting the check, MTC Executive Vice President Walter Romanowski spoke about the maritime community and his desire to improve and expand its awareness of ITEP.

“Even though Marine Terminals is part of a global industry, we also work in this small community, and we are pleased to continue our donation each year,” Romanowski said. “We know many companies look to see how they can help the community, and we hope to expand awareness of ITEP’s programs so those companies will become sponsors as well.”

The donation from MTC will be used to support the ITEP’s expansion to bring to students at public and private high schools located in the footprint of the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach its programs and academies that introduce careers in international trade through international business-related academies and freestanding programs, which incorporate videos and lesson plans for faculty and high school students. The current four academies are ITA - International Trade Academy, GSS – Global Safety and Security Academy; GES – Global Environmental Sciences and MATCH, which stands for Maritime Agriculture, Cuisine, Hospitality and Tourism.

The students thanked Marine Terminals for its financial support and shared how the academies have given them a sense of family and foundation to continue to pursue their educational and career goals, which includes journalism, political science, criminal justice/FBI, architect and engineering.
