Coast Stevedore Company Makes History Again With Winning Safety Record

Colby Haines Tel: (562) 420-2782 April 11, 2002 The success of Marine Terminals Corp.’s safety program is clearly visible as the company’s many West Coast sites were honored with top awards for 2001 from The Pacific Maritime Association. At the recent PMA 53rd Annual Safety Awards Banquets, MTC - Los Angeles/Long Beach operations became the first company in the history of PMA Safety awards to win the First Place Group A Stevedore “Area” Award for Southern California for six consecutive years. MTC-LA/LB operations also achieved a history-making 5-peat on the Coast level by winning First Place Group A Stevedore “Coast” Award for the fifth consecutive year, which was actually the sixth consecutive year for MTC as a company, as its Northern California operations won the award six years ago. Other MTC sites receiving top safety honors include: MTCPort Hueneme: First Place Group B Stevedore “Area” Award Southern California for the second consecutive year; MTC-Stockton: First Place Group C Stevedore “Area” Award Northern California, Second Place Group C Stevedore “Coast” Award and an award certificate In Recognition of Outstanding Achievement in Zero Injury Rate in 2001; MTC-Sacramento: Second Place Group C “Area” Award Northern California. MTC-Vancouver/Oregon: First Place Group B Stevedore “Coast” Award and First Place Group B “Area” Award Oregon/Columbia River; MTC Terminal 6-Portland: second consecutive Oregon “Area” Class A Container Operator Low Injury Rate; and MTC-Seattle/Tacoma achieved a 4-peat as they won another First Place Washington “Area” Award Group A Container Operations. MTC U.S. West Coast areas received additional awards for injury rate reductions in Group A, B and C categories. MTC Chief Operating Officer Dave Adam, commented on receiving the PMA honors. “Safety has always been a top priority in all MTC’s operations,” Adam said. “However, we know these achievements represent a group effort that could not have been accomplished without the tremendous support of our ILWU labor force.” All MTC regional safety departments are ISO registered and hold their own ISO certification from Worldwide Quality Assurance, United Kingdom.
