(MTC), leading West Coast contract stevedore and terminal operating company, announced that effective August 1, 2004, Don Wylie will assume the position of MTC executive vice president of general stevedoring services, replacing retiring Ken Passe. Wylie rejoins MTC following 13 years at the Port of Long Beach, eight as trade and maritime services director and the last five years as managing director of maritime services. "I will miss Long Beach," Wylie said. "However, I am returning to an industry I know well and a company I respect." Relocating to MTC's Oakland headquarters, Wylie will be responsible for the company's West Coast general stevedoring activities, which includes breakbulk, automobile, refrigerated cargo, contract container stevedoring as well as bulk commodity operations. In making the announcement, Marine Terminals Corp. CEO Douglas Tilden elaborated on the appointment. "We are pleased to have Don rejoin MTC," Tilden said. "Don's comprehensive industry background brings added value to the depth of knowledge and experience of our existing management team. He is familiar with our customers and our organization from his years as MTC's Northern California general manager. Don's familiarity with our business and his extensive experience will provide the leadership of this important line of MTC's business. Our customers can be assured of the same quality service they have come to expect." Wylie's industry experience began with Cooper Stevedoring Co. in Mobile, Ala., (now Cooper/T. Smith Corp.), starting as a ship superintendent and later opening a branch for Cooper in the Port of Norfolk, Virginia. In 1975, he moved with Cooper to Long Beach, Calif. Wylie was promoted to vice president in 1984, overseeing Cooper's operations on the West Coast. Later, he managed the Husky Container Terminal in Tacoma, Wash., helping to design and operate the first West Coast on-dock container intermodal rail yard. Wylie, who received his Bachelor's Degree from Thomas Edison State College, has served on the boards of directors of the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, the Propeller Club's Los Angeles/Long Beach chapter, and the Board of Trustees of Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. He is a past president of the Rotary Club of Long Beach and the International Business Association of Southern Calif., and is past chair of the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.
